Overview Of English
English
is spoken as a first language by over 350 million people. Most of these
speakers live in Europe, the Americas, Asia, Africa, Australia, New
Zeland and some Islands of the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific oceans. It
is used as a second language by between 1-1.5 billion people. About 25%
of the world communicate with each other in English. It is the ‘common
language’ of the world.
In
countries like India (which has the worlds largest English-speaking
population) and Singapore, a large number of people use English as a
second language. In international communications, Politics and Business
are conducted in English.Medical
and scientific studies are written in English. Pop music and film are
viewed worldwide. It is the language of the Internet, of air and sea
traffic control, of news broadcasting and news agencies.
